Backstory

Music has been around since the beginning of time. Biblical stories like, "Paradise Lost", written by John Milton, tells the story of the Fall of Man, focusing on Satan’s rebellion against God. Considered to be one of the greatest works of English literature. It explores the themes of free will, obedience, temptation, and the nature of good and evil.

Before the rebellion, heaven is defined by "instrumental harmony" and "festivals of joy" where angels "hymn the Eternal Father" in unison.

Another mythical story is of a man who comes to a crossroad in his life and sells his soul the devil to become one of the greatest musicians and folk stories to ever exist.  It also revolves around a period of time when a culture of people were oppressed into slavery, a brutally repressive, labor-intensive era. Yet the peoplemanaged to preserve musical traditions of harmony that would build the foundation of what we know now as Ragtime, Jazz & Blues.

As a writer and a musician myself, I've experienced this so called epiphany or profound moment that has changed my life. Through an abussive upbringing, yet nothing as horrific as slavery, my story isn't just about the music, but a reflection of my own experiences and struggles throughout life, dealing with my own pain, temptations and having faith in something more meaningful than myself or the meaning of our surreal existence.

What we will learn from this film, is that being a good soul isn't always as easy as one thinks. Sometimes you have to bend the rules a little to get peoples attention to something that means so much to you, or to someone you care about. We get to see how music sometimes shapes the hearts of others through the most imusual moments.

TREATMENT:

THE OPENING IMAGE: ( NARRATION OPENS THE SCENE )

“The meaning of euphoric expression is that of ones soul which opens up completely to compliment the meaning of life”. Whether you believe in God or not, imagine if you will a higher power that exists only from within oneself, within yourself. Now simply tell me, where do you want it to take you?

THE INTRO OF KILA : THEME STATED

Here we meet a young woman violinist who’s gone through life believing in the thought of love so much that she wears her heart on her sleeve, only to fall victim to heartache and pain. But throughout her obstacles in life she’s learns a valuable lesson from the help of her true love, “Music”. This is a story of determination for truth and the will to live.

Born and raised in the San Francisco area in a small town off the coast of California, Kila grew up in a beautiful surrounding as well as a culturally diverse society. Her mother and father were very shielding and taught their daughter about respect, kindness and believing that you should always treat others as you would want to be treated. Morals were very important.

When Kila was seven, she received a gift that would put the biggest smile on a young girls face, “her violin”. She would learn how to play this instrument throughout the years with such grace and poise that she would be rewarded all kinds of scholarships to the colleges of her choice. Dream’s of playing for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra became a definite possibility. Her life was going in a spectacular direction. A direction a parent would be proud of.

On the night of June 26th 1998, “Graduation Night”, would be a night that would dramatically change the course of Kila’s life forever. Her mother would be tragically killed in a car accident driving home from the ceremony.

Trying to understand the meaning of it all, Kila’s future would become unclear as she must say good-bye to her mother & best-friend forever.( Narration Ends )

ACT 1

THE MOONRAKER: ( A FEW YEARS LATER )A brilliant sunset lingers as we enter into a restaurant off the coast of Pacifica where Kila waitresses part-time. There’s RICHARD, the lounge piano player, ELISE the sexy bartender, CJ the busy boy who’s in love with Elise and TONY, their general manager. Another waiter is Kila’s Boyfriend TOMMY, a striving actor/model who also strives for attention from everyone he comes across. He even signs autographs for his tables letting his customers know he will one day be famous. The two have been high school sweethearts since their senior year in high school. Kila is very much in love and dreams of having a family with him.3a) Kila’s Father calls from his home.

HOUSE PARTY:Later that night, Tommy and Kila would arrive to a house party in where the majority of the crowd is either getting drunk or high. Here we meet the up and coming director, “JACKIE”, a very artsy wild looking type of woman with the typical Hollywood ego.As the evening would progress, Kila would lose Tommy sometime throughout the night. Searching through room after room, she would meet some very interesting people. She would finally find her way downstairs where she hears laughter coming from a back room. As she approaches the door, she is shocked by what she sees. Tommy is getting snuggly fresh in the laundry room with the first time director. Kila’s heart lunges into her throat as she storms out of the party not knowing what to think or how to react. Everyone stares at her as she runs out crying.

B-STREET BLUES: ( INTRODUCTION TO AMANDA )

Hurt and distraught, Kila vigorously walks through downtown San Mateo.Every second seems like an eternity as she seeks for a near by pay phone. She finally spots one and tries to make a call when an out of service recording comes on, which only adds that much more grief to the matter. Frustrated and in disbelief she sits down and tries to get a hold of herself.

From across the street Kila notices people waiting in line to enter a blues bar called, “Vibes”. She walks over where she is greeted by a DOORMAN. She asks to use their phone as the doorman directs her to the back where she tries calling Elise to come pick her up.After leaving a message with Elise, Kila then walks to the restroom where she would meet and befriend a woman named AMANDA who would share some stories of her trials & tribulations about men and relationships. Amanda would then persuade Kila to go and have a few drinks while waiting for Elise and introduces her friends KIM & DEIDRA who’ve been preying on men all night.

The night progresses and Kila has a few too many drinks when she begins to feel a little buzzed. Next thing you know, Kila is dancing, having a good time and letting her frustrations out when she notices a violin on stage as if its speaking to her. She can’t hold back. She jumps up on stage and picks the instrument up as the band just looks at each other with confusion.

Kila asks permission to play if they don’t mind. So she begins to play as the crowd goes crazy. Kila starts to get dizzy as the lights begin to swirl. The next thing we know, Kila’s praying to the porcelain God for the next half hour.

INTRODUCTION TO ROY: ( KILA & ROY’S FIRST SCENE )Amanda takes Kila outside to get some fresh air where we first meet Roy, a music producer from Chicago. The two ( in a sarcastic way ) hit it off and get to know each other a little until Amanda breaks up the conversation.
